Paris, the City of Light, was not the same for 7 days in the month of December 2009. 26 students from Nanyang Primary School, Singapore, landed in France's capital on 8 Dec and proceeded to terrorize embark on a cultural immersion in their twinned National Olympic Committee as part of the Friends@YOG programme. Relive their Paris exerience in this blog entry, put together by the teachers and students of Nanyang Primary School.
Day 1 We arrived at 6.30 am in Charles De Gaulle airport after 14-hour flight. Our first stop was the symbol of Paris – the Eiffel Tower! We enjoyed the panoramic view of Paris city from the second level of the majestic tower. We also bought some souvenirs for our family and friends. Other landmarks we visited:
Day 2 We got up early in the morning to have breakfast and headed out to Disneyland. Though the weather was cold and slightly damp, we were still in high spirits. It was really winter in wonderland.
Day 3 We headed to the Musée du Louvre or the Grand Louvre, another landmark of France. The museum is housed in the Louvre Palace (Palais du Louvre) which began as a fortress built in the late 12th century under Philip II. Remnants of the fortress are still visible. The building was extended many times to form the present Louvre Palace. Finally, the highlight of the day – Visiting the France’s NOC. We were received warmly by the NOC’s personnels as well as our friends at Sannois school(dressed in green).
Day 4 We visited the Sannoir school and got to know more about our French counterparts. The school even had a vegetable garden which could grow plants in a colder climate. Though there were language differences, we sketched and charaded to express what we wanted to say. We also taught the Sannoir students how to play some of Singapore's traditional games. After lunch, it was time for a mini tourney between the Sannoir children and Nanyang children. Two entire basketball courts were laid out with table tennis tables complete with table tennis bats and balls ready for the afternoon’s event. Our hosts graciously let us win and we brought home a champion medal and many email addresses and contacts of our new friends.
Day 5 We visited the Natural History Museum and headed to the Seine River for a river cruise. The scenery was fantastic despite the chilly temperature. Dinner was sumptuous! We had vegetable soup, beef stew and Napoleon ice cream. After that, we headed to the Eiffel tower at 9pm. It was an amazing display of lights adorned upon the tower.
What did the students learn from their trip to Paris? Cheng E Sheen, 11, said: "I was very surprised by the Mona Lisa. It was very small! I thought it would be grand and large. She also had no eyebrows!" Kennedy Au Ze Yu, 11, was more particular about food. "The food is really different. We always had baguette...and salad! Not everyone was used to the salad though."
